چکیده

Widespread closure of deep coal mines in industrialised countries in recent decades has resulted in increased pollution of watercourses by acidic, metal-rich mine drainage following flooding of abandoned mine workings. Schemes for remediation of such polluted mine drainage encourage the precipitation of iron, normally in settlement ponds or constructed wetlands, thereby generating large quantities of ‘ochre’ (i.e., Fe(OH)3 and FeO OH) (see, for instance, Younger et al., 2002). Typically, this ochre is stockpiled pending use or disposal. Although a number of possible end-uses have been considered (e.g. colouring bricks/cement and in synthesising coagulants for drinking water; Tarasova et al., 2002), no single end-use has yet been identified which could consume the projected future production of ochre in the UK and Europe. In this chapter a further possible

A Novel Method for Removing Phosphorus from Agricultural Runoff and Sewage Effluent

Treatment of polluting discharges from abandoned mines is producing large quantities of ochre (mainly iron (III) oxides) for which no major end-use has yet been identified. At the same time, phosphorus pollution is a serious threat to the water environment in industrialised countries, causing eutrophication, algal blooms, fish kills and loss of water resources. Newcastle and Edinburgh Universit...

Enhancing phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands with ochre from mine drainage treatment.

No single end-use has yet been identified that is capable of consuming the projected production of ochre (mainly iron (III) oxides) from mine drainage treatment. However, the high sorption capacity of ochre for phosphorus (up to 26 mg kg(-1)) means that it could be used in constructed wetlands to enhance phosphorus removal. Laboratory batch experiments showed that coarse-grained ochre removes 9...

Evaluation of iron ochre from mine drainage treatment for removal of phosphorus from wastewater.

Treatment of polluting discharges from abandoned coal mines in the UK currently produces ca 30,000 t y(-1) of hydrous iron oxides ("ochre"), for which there is no major end-use, but which has previously been shown to have potential for removing P from wastewater and agricultural runoff. The efficiency of ochre for P removal from wastewater was investigated in experiments at two sites in the UK:...

Algal Growth Response in Two Illinois Rivers Receiving Sewage Effluent

Phosphorus (P) primarily enters streams in Illinois as effluent released from sewage treatment plants and runoff from agricultural fields. As a result, water quality can be affected and large amounts of algal growth are possible. We determined the growth of periphytic algae (as chla) relative to differing amounts of P (factor of 10) released in sewage effluent in two rivers. The Salt Fork Vermi...

Investigating the effect of Biodrof systems based on algae-bacterial biofilm for removing total Nitrogen, Phosphorus from domestic wastewater

Due to an increase of the human population on Earth, log of pollutants to water resources has increased and this caused the more restriction of water resources for human. Limited availability of fresh water resources, especially in the Middle East that have arid and semi-arid climate increases the importance of water recycling. The main problem in many conventional wastewater treatment systems ...
